3 Locks Cross Cottage, formerly registered as 39 Dormer Cottage, was once owned by Sir Gerard Fuller of the Fuller Family as part of the Neston Park Estate.
Still standing today and still owned by the Fuller Family, Neston Park Estate remains a Grade II Listed property and sits less than 1 mile from Locks Cross Cottage. A must see if staying with us!
The land that Locks Cross Cottage sits on was sold at auction on Wednesday 12th September 1951 by Thompson, Noad & Phipp at the Town Hall, Corsham, Wiltshire. This auction compromised of 34 cottage residences of character and 2 shops with living accommodation. These cottages and shops bought in an incredible £503 rental fee per annum for the Neston Estate.
Pam's parents, Mr Alfred & Mrs Elsie Bryant first begun renting 39 & 40 Dormer Cottage, now known as 3 & 4 Locks Cross Cottage, in the September of 1929 as per the original rent book still held at Locks Cross Cottage. Alfred bought these properties at Auction as above, costing £400 and continued living here with his family. It is known that Alfred, at some stage following, bought number 41 Dormer Cottage for £500, now known as 1 Locks Cross Cottage. In his later life, Alfred sold 40 Dormer Cottage to another family.
Which takes us to Pam- Pamela Elfreda Bryant. Pam, daughter of Alfred and Elsie, grew up in Neston village and was a proud member of the church of St Phillip and St James, Neston. Having been Baptised in 1928 and then confirmed in 1945, Pam followed in her mothers footsteps of supporting the church as a caretaker and a verger. In her early years, Pam worked at The Neston Glove Company, which was formed after the First World War to give women an alternative to going into service and men from quarry work and farming. As written in Pam's diary,
"Imagine being paid an old 6 3/4d for tying 144 knots per dozen pairs of gloves."
-You can find 2 pairs of original gloves at the cottage made by Pam herself.
Pam also spent time supporting St Johns Ambulance.
Pam's other passions included cooking, being in the garden and the wildlife. In the pages of this website, we take you on a journey of Pams life, her favourite recipes and stories from over the years.
